The Pantera was designed by American-Dutch designer Tom Tjaarda and replaced the Mangusta. Unlike the Mangusta, the Pantera's chassis is made of a steel monocoque, a construction that De Tomaso used for the first time.  

After the Pantera went into production, De Tomaso introduced a motorsport-oriented Group 4 version of the Pantera GTS. British engineer and driver Mike Parkes, who had previously developed racing cars for Ferrari, was entrusted with developing the new car. 

The announcement that the 911 would beat the Pantera Group 4 led Porsche to develop the 911 RS and RSR, and Porsche used all its influence with the FIA ​​to increase the Pantera's minimum weight to 1250 kg, which was still a very competitive one Package results. A Pantera Group 4 is widely recognized as one of the best - if not THE best - Group 4 sports cars of its era.
