This is one of 2 BMW Super Tourers that were built by BMW Motorsport GMBH and shipped to South Africa for the BMW South Africa Motorsport team for use in the 1994 SATCAR Championship. Sponsored by BP Envirocar, the team enlisted Deon Joubert and Shaun van der Linde as their drivers. At every race 2 German technicians were also flown out to support these locally-run cars and it proved a resounding success with Shaun van der Linde taking the championship.
From information provided and research carried out, this car on offer is Shaun van der Linde’s championship winner from that season. Deon Joubert confirmed that his old car was sold to Germany many years ago and this car was recently imported into the UK having been purchased direct from Shaun van der Linde who confirmed it as his 1994 Championship winner at the time of sale. At the end of the 1994 season the 1994 team cars were retired for testing duties and new cars were provided for 1995, however Shaun suffered a massive accident at Zwartkops in his new car (see here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1HIo1h87tQ&app=desktop) and it was effectively destroyed hence returned to Germany. Before a replacement shell was sent, he reverted back to using this (his 1994) car for the following round at Killarney (as can be seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvETThsqszc&list=FL8fcIM4N5D_6F6jZTEnJC2g&index=2)
To this day, the car retains the number 1 on the doors per this outing. In terms of specification, the car is as it started the 1994 season (1993 spec for Europe) with a 6 speed manual gearbox and the more versatile S14 power unit. The drivetrain was removed for transport and is offered alongside the car, it is reputed to have run recently (albeit not in anger) and like the rest of the car could benefit from a sympathetic rebuild before returning to the track. The shell is in remarkable shape and this has never been anything but a Super Tourer thus no hybrid Endurance mods or anything. It is understood that before Shaun van der Linde acquired it for his personal collection it was retained by BMW South Africa for promotional purposes.
Finished in this dynamic livery and in fabulously original condition this is an ideal winter rebuild and it should be very competitive in the HSCC Super Touring Car Trophy for which it is eligible. It comes with a small selection of spares which include uprights and wheels. Please do not hesitate to get in contact for more details or to arrange an appointment to view.
